Winifred Simon and Herb Smith had prints accepted for the August-September Wimberley Valley Art League Gallery juried exhibition. The exhibition opens on July 31st with a public champagne reception and is on display through September 28, 2010 at the Wimberley Community Center.

Carol Serur had 4 images accepted and won third place in the recent "Painting with Pixels" contest held by the Williamson County Art Guild. In addition, the owner of Framers Gallery, invited Carol to return with her 4 images plus others for her own show. Starting May 5th, Carol also has 6 color infrared images at Starbucks at the San Marcos outlet mall next to Pottery Barn for one month.

Herb Smith's "Forest Birch" was one of 136 images chosen from among nearly 2000 for the honorable mention gallery in the Lensbaby "Get Published!" competition.

Lynn Baldwin and Herb Smith had single images accepted for High and Dry: A photographic exhibition of peoples & places of the world's dry lands in The International Cultural Center of Texas Tech University in Lubbock. The opening reception will be December 4, and the exhibit runs through January 15, 2010.

Herb Smith won first place, and Judy Nichols had images accepted for the New Braunfels Art League's Artoberfest 2009. The opening reception was October 8, and the exhibit runs through November 14, 2009.

HCPC members did well in the 2010 Hill Country Alliance calendar contest. Carolyn Whiteside won the "Hill Country Enterprise" category and her image is featured for the month of August; One of Rose Epps images is on the cover of the calendar and another is featured for May; a photo by Carol Serur is featured for October. Jane Guerin and Rose Epps each had three of their images selected as cameo shots, while Kathy McCall had two of her images chosen. Herb Smith served as chairman of the organization's calendar commmittee. Calendars are available for purchase on the Hill Country Alliance website.
Carolyn Whiteside's image Breaking Away was selected for exhibition in Shorelines, an international exhibition for excellence in coastal art at the Rockport Center for the Arts. The opening reception will be October 17, and the exhibit will run through November 21, 2009.
Rose Epps, Carol Serur and Herb Smith won Honorable Mentions, and Jane Guerin, Kathy McCall, Lois Schubert and Winifred Simon had prints accepted for the "IR Dreaming" exhibition that opened September 26 at the Watson Studio Gallery in Johnson City. The exhibit runs to October 24, 2009.
When the awards for the Naturescapes competition were announced at the opening reception on September 4th, HCPC members did very well. Herb Smith won Best in Show and an Award of Merit. Larry Alford, Ken Jones and Winifred Simon won Awards of Excellence, Ken also receieved an Award of Merit, and Winifred received three. Carol Serur received an Award of Merit, and Carol Watson, Jane Guerin and Raena Wharton each won two Awards of Merit.
A photograph by Winifred Simon was one of the 12 finalists selected from thousands of photographs in the National Geographic Energizer Ultimate Photo Contest. Congratulations Winifred!

HCPC members are well-represented in the fifth annual Naturescapes contest and exhibition cosponsored by the San Marcos Greenbelt Alliance and HCPC. Art Arizpe, Carol Serur, Carol Watson, Don Koehler, Herb Smith, Jane Guerin, Kenneth Jones, Larry Alford, Lois Schubert, Raena Wharton, Winifred Simon and Carolyn Whiteside had images accepted for the show. The contest was very competitive, with 65 images selected from a record 222 entries by juror Greg Lasley. Awards will be announced at the opening reception on September 4th. Then, the exhibition will be on display at the San Marcos Activity Center through October 30, 2009.
Herb Smith's print "Winter Dawn" was accepted for the "Fantastic Plastic" exhibition that opens July 25 with a public and artist reception at the Watson Studio Gallery in Johnson City. The exhibit runs to September 19, 2009. The same image was accepted for the Vermont Photography Workplace juried exhibition "Water" which runs from July 18 through August 9th.

Winifred's image "Gary" won First place for 2-dimensional art, and her image "Uptown Blanco Chairs" won honorable mention. The exhibition is on display through August 10, 2009.
Wes Odell received two Green Eagle Certificates from PSA in their Color Portfolio Study Group. One was for his "Park City Barn" in April and the second was for his "On the Way to Versers" in May. This is part of the PSA Pictorial Print Division's American Portfolios Study Group program.
In April, Liz Lautner won 1st and 3rd in the DeWitt county Shutterbug Photography Contest in the Flowers/Plants Category. She also won a special category called "Texas Wildflower"
Also in April, Wes Odell won a Third Place in the Photographic Society of America's Monthly Picture of the Month (Monochrome) "Water Lilly," and an Honorable Mention in Color, "She'll be Comin' 'Round the Mountain," both in the month of March.
April through May 20, Herb Smith had three of his pinhole photographs exhibited in a juried show at the Huisache Grill in New Braunfels.
John Roof received a merit award for his painting "Family Souls" at LSU National 20x20x20 in Baton Rouge, LA. the juror was Rene Barilleaux chief curator of the Contemporary Art at the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio.

Petesie's image "String of Pearls" won Best in Show, and her image "Opening Soon" won honorable mention for 2-dimensional art. Tom's image "Odd Man Out" won first place , and Herb's photograph "Pinhole Series: River Path" received an honorable mention. The exhibition is on display through April 12, 2009.

During Oct, Elizabeth Lautner won 1st and 3rd in the Flowers and Plants categories of the Gonzales County Camera Club's annual "Come and Take It" Photography Contest. In August, she won lst in Flowers/Plants in the Victoria Photography Club print exhibition. She also received an Honorable Mention in the Flower Category (non-professional) in the Lucie Awards (IPA).

At the Georgetown Fall Art Hop Artists' reception October 3, Herb Smith was awarded first place in photography, Lucy Durfee received two honorable mentions, and Jane Guerin recieved one honorable mention.
Larry Alford and Wes Odell also had prints selected for exhibition. The exhibition is being held in The Georgetown Public Library, The Framers Gallery, Annaralle, and 8th Street Studio through November 3rd.
Wes Odell is exhibiting 15 photographs with the theme "Moments in Time" in a three-man show at the Healing Arts Gallery of St.Davids/Georgetown Hospital. The exhibit runs October 2-31.
Wes won Honorable Mentions for his images submitted in the Photographic Society of America's (PSA) competitions in July and August. In the PSA Annual Green Eagle Competition, Wes won a 2nd Place medal and an Honorable Mention for B&W photographs, and an Honorable Mention for one of his color prints.
Lucy Durfee, Rose Epps, Janet Sanders, Lois Schubert, Carol Serur and Winifred Simon had prints accepted for the After Life - El Muertos Dulce show currently at the Watson Gallery in Johnson City. The exhibit runs through November 22nd.

John Roof had two of his paintings accepted for the Texas Artist Exhibit at the Beeville Musuem Of Art. John also will be represented by the Rive Gauche Comtemporary art gallery in Scottsdale, AZ.
HCPC president Carol Watson is one of the first three honorees chosen by Dr. Anthony Bannon, Director of the prestigious and historic George Eastman House for the George Eastman House Honors Gallery on Photoworkshop.com.
Carol Watson is one of the three inspiring women photographers in the Tres Chicas exhibition now at the Watson Gallery in Johnson City. Carol's work in digital infrared unearths a fairy-tale beauty that can only be found on the borders of visible light and the imagination. The other two photographers are Susan Burnstine (Los Angeles, CA) and Polly Chandler (Austin, TX).
An artist and public reception is Saturday, June 7th from 4:00pm - 8:00pm. The exhibition will run until July 19th, 2008.

Pictorial Picture of the Month contest in April for his color picture, "My Orchids." Each
month a PSA member may submit up to two color and two monochrome
images in the monthly contest.
Herb Smith was selected as the first Artist of the Month by the Wimberley Valley Art League. In recognition, his print "Blanco River Morning" will be on display at Interior Elements in Wimberley during the month of May.
Wes Odell won first place in PSA's Picture of the Month Contest in February for his color image of "A Quiet Morning in an Alpine Village." He also won a third place in color and a third place in monochrome.

Herb Smith's Lensbaby photograph "River Trees" was accepted for "Unrefined Light: Image-Making with Plastic Cameras and their Friends" at the Foundry Arts Centre in St. Charles, Missouri. The exhibition runs from March 28, 2008 through May 9,2008.

The exhibition is sponsored by the San Marcos Arts Area Council and the City of San Marcos with support from the San Marcos Arts Commission.

Larry Alford had a photo entitled "Autumn Leaves" selected for the Texas Bank and Trust 2008 Collectors Calendar. The calendar theme this year was "Scenes of East Texas".
Phyllis Rummel exhibited her photography at the Legends of Texas Swing with a booth at the Nutty Brown Cafe May 5, 2007. Her work also was on the Tour for The Texas Commission for the Arts the week of May 15th - May 20th. On the May 19th - Artists of Drippings Springs Studio Tour she exhibited her work at Stick Horse Studios. One of her pieces Prickly Poppy is on display in the Precinct County Commissioners office on Mercer Street in Dripping Springs.

Herb's black and white photograph "Cypress Roots" received the Best in Show award at the opening reception May 26th. The exhibition, featuring all forms of art runs through July 27, 2007.
Carol Watson and Herb Smith had prints accepted for the Spring TOP 30 Juried Competition at the Divishow Studio and Gallery in Cuautitlan Izcalli, Mexico. The international show, featuring digital art and photography runs from March 15 to April 16, 2007.

In competition news, Carol had three images selected as finalists in the 2007 Spider Awards , a large international black and white photography competition with thousands of photographers competing. One of her images was selected to be published in their upcoming book titled "The World's Best Black & White Photography" which is being published this month.
In other news, Carol had two of her infrared images selected to appear on the album artwork for the UK-based rock group, Eidolonia. Also, the Mayor of Guanajuato, Mexico selected an image Carol shot in Guanajuato titled "Courage of Pipila" to be part of the permanent collection on display at the museum at Monumento el Pipila in the center of the city.

Bill Barber has an image among the 58 selected from over 1400 entries to be included in the Krappy Kamera IX, exhibit at the Soho Photo Gallery in New York City during the month of March. The image,done with a pinhole camera, was captured at Isle Royale National Park this past Labor Day.
Herb Smith's "Autumn Fog" was published in the Artists' Showcase supplement in the January/February 2007 issue of CameraArts magazine.
Herb Smith had two digital infrared prints from his Hill Country Trees project accepted for "Illuminance 2007" at the Buddy Holly Center in Lubbock. The exhibition will run from March 2, 2007 through April 21, 2007.
Lucy Durfee's image titled "Hot Springs Post Office" taken in Big Bend National Park, received an Honorable Mention for the sixth annual HIGH AND DRY exhibition at Texas Tech University's International Cultural Center. The exhibition will run from November 10, 2006 to January 17, 2007 with a reception on December 1, 2006.
Carol Watson was awarded 2nd Place in the International Photography Awards 2006 in the Nature category (Trees) for her series of infrared images titled "Arborteum". Carol also received an Honorable Mention in the Advertising category for her series of images for the Benini Sculpture Ranch, and another Honorable Mention in the Portrait Category for her photograph titled "Romanian Child". There were over 15,000 entrants in this competition from around the world.
One of Carol's images, "Palo Verde #1", was selected by curator Colin Westerbeck to be in the 2006 International Photography Awards Best of Show. She is one of 40 photographers from the 2006 IPA competition whose images were chosen to be a part of the traveling "Best Of Show" that will appear in over 6 countries in the coming year. The show will have its premier in London, England on October 6th. Carol also had an image that was part of the 2005 Best of Show and is the first amateur photographer to be selected for this exhibition twice.

September 8 - October 27 - Marilyn Brister, Lucy Durfee, Sean Claes, Petesie Lee, Jane Moss, Phyllis C. Rummel, Winifred Simon, Herb Smith, and Carol Watson had photographs accepted for the 2006 San Marcos Naturescapes Photography Exhibition at the San Marcos Activity Center. The event judges chose 67 prints for exhibition from the 131 photographs that were entered by 29 photographers. Presentation of awards and $1000 in prizes took place at a reception on September 29th. This event is co-sponsored by HCPC and the San Marcos Greenbelt Alliance. See the award winners on the SMGA website.
September 1-30 - Carol Watson and Herb Smith had prints accepted for the "People Places and Things" exhibition at the Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, Colorado. Carol's print is her "Great Texas Staredown" and Herb's is "Autumn Fog" which was awarded honorable mention. Both prints were then selected for the Center's second Denver International Airport Exhibition in early 2007.
One of Carol Watson's images was selected by Women In Photography International to appear in "Turning Silver - 25th Anniversary" a commemorative book celebrating women photographers from around the world. The 100 images which will appear in the book were selected by a panel of jurors including Joyce Tenneson, Kim Gougenheim, Stephen Perloff, and others.
Carol Watson's images were selected for publishing in two novels: "Treachery on the Bayou" by Elsaida Drain (cover image) and "Mondo Cocktail, A Shaken and Stirred History" by Christine Sismondo. Carol recently presented a lecture titled "An Introduction to Digital Infrared Photography" for the Gulf States Camera Council conference, and for the Austin Shutterbug Club. Carol has been asked to judge the upcoming Sun City Photography Club's photography competition and exhibition in October.

June 5 - 25 "Homegrown" invitational exhibition at the Fine Arts Gallery, Texas State University. Seventeen prints from the ABIA "Texas Not Tuscany" exhibition by HCPC members Lucy Durfee, John Kuykendahl, Petesie Lee, Jane Moss, Herb Smith, and Carol Watson.
May 3 - 31 - "Texas at Night" exhibition at Barnes & Noble - Sunset Valley.
Lucy Durfee, will exhibit her "Texas at Night" photographs during the month of May. Her images include various locations around Texas from Austin to San Antonio to Big Bend National Park. Photographing after the sun goes down is fun but challenging. Sometimes she uses a spotlight with a diffusing filter to light the scene, other times, like with the Alamo, the subject is already lit.
April 22 and 23 - Spicewood Vineyards - Wine and Wildflowers Trail.

February 15 - April 11, 2006 - Texas Not Tuscany exhibition at Autin-Bergstrom International Airport. News Flash: ABIA purchased 18" x 27" versions of nine of the prints for permanent display at the airport.
Two of Carol Watson's portraits, "Maize" and "Munequitas" were accepted as part of the Coastal Arts League Nationa Photo Competition in Half Moon Bay, California. The competition was juried by Michael Collopy. Exhibition dates are March 6 to April 30, 2006.
Carol Watson's image, "Swayback Barn" was accepted into the "American Art Collector" magazine's "Southeast" edition by juror Jan Christensen-Heller. The magazine goes out each month to hundreds of galleries and art collectors across the country.

Dangenart Gallery in Nashville, TN has selected two of my images ("Joyride" and "Miss May") as part of their "Peek Through!" juried art exhibition. My images will be on display at the gallery in mid-March and they will provide gallery respresentation for 6-months. - Carol Watson

The International Photography Awards and its title sponsor, Pilsner Urquell, have chosen one of my abandoned barn images ("Swayback Barn") as part of the 2005 Pilsner Urquell IPA Best of Show exhibition. This year the exhibit, curated by renowned Photography Consultant, Debra Weiss, will travel around the world to photography festivals in Los Angeles and New York, Toronto, Canada, Rome, Italy Perpignan, France, Lodz, Poland and Prague, Czech-Republic. - Carol Watson
Carol Watson and Herb Smith had prints accepted for "High and Dry: A photographic exhibition of landscapes and people of the world's dry lands" sponsored by the International Cultural Center of Texas Tech University's Office of International Affairs. The exhibit was on display from December 2, 2005 - January 20, 2006.
On October 17, 2005, Carol Watson received the "IPA Discovery of the year" award at the International Photography Awards Lucie Awards ceremony (photography's equivalent to the Oscar!) . She also was awarded first place in the Nonprofessional Photographer of the Year: Architecture for her series Prairie Solitude. Well-deserved congratulation Carol!
September 30 - October 2, 2005, Rita Karydus, Kay Reike and Herb Smith had prints accepted for exhibition at "Bayfest 2005" in Corpus Christi. Herb won an Honorable Mention in the black and white category for his print "Cypress Roots 263."
