January 2025

Hill Country Photography Club Posted on January 6, 2025 by Art ArizpeJanuary 6, 2025

Our next meeting is on Thursday, January 16th, 7:00 pm, at First Lutheran Church!

Come early to visit and share with your fellow photographers. Charlie Kreitler will be presenting a new way of seeing things via a little-known feature of Photo Shop. Charlie’s topic is Playing with Photoshop’s “Polar Coordinates”.

Agenda

  • 6:30 Set up and social time.
  • 7:00 Welcome and Member News
  • 7:10 Quote of the Month
  • 7:15 Announcements
  • 7:30 Program: Playing with Photoshop’s “Polar Coordinates” with Charlie Kreitler
  • 8:15 – Member Share Photos

Program: Playing with Photoshop’s “Polar Coordinates” with Charlie Kreitler

Photoshop Coordinates is a hidden element in Photoshop. It changes the coordinates of your digital images from either 1) rectangular to polar or 2) polar to rectangular or 3) a hybrid of 1)and 2). Simpler said, it converts your photo as a rectangle to a circle, or conversely from a circle to a rectangle. And in doing so, you may end up with a strange new image, unlike your original. Maybe you too can be converted.

Charlie started snapping pictures 50 years ago. He spent his professional life as a geologist and always carried a camera to document his work. When he retired, he had time to take photography more seriously and play with the artistic side. His talk explores the use of Photoshop’s Polar Coordinates to create an alternative look at processing pictures.

“After hearing Jerry Sargent’s presentation last month on simplification in photography, and seeing the potential for drama and beauty that can be found in the minimalist image,  let’s see what we have learned. “The obvious choice here is a macro. But … maybe it’s an image with an obvious subject and, noticeable only on a close look, a little unexpected object that makes the picture special. From Bill Galloway:  “This is a term I learned on an Alaska photo safari. In Alaska, it’s bears, moose, caribou, whales, etc.  In Texas, it would be a bit different: longhorns, foxes, armadillos, really big birds etc.  Anyway, after last month’s theme focused on mechanical objects, it’s time to take a tour through the world of animals.”  You are encouraged to send 2 images for this part of the meeting, on this topic…or another if you prefer. Please rename your images 1FirstName_LastName.jpg, 2FirstName_LastName.jpg and send to photos@jerrysargent.com no later than May 14th to make sure they are included.

Program:  An Introduction to Photoshop Layers by David Oson

This month’s program will be an introduction to Photoshop Layers. If you already use Photoshop, You’ll learn at least one new thing from David Olson’s presentation. If you have never used Photoshop, you will see the value of using both Photoshop and Lightroom if you are a LR user.

From David Olson: “I’m a retired engineer that has become a technical photographer through self-teaching. My motivation comes from a sense of adventure and great curiosity. They have gotten me into mischief and given me great joy and satisfaction. The adventure always has me going to new places and seeing new things. The curiosity pushes me to ‘walk over that next hill’ just to see what is there. And if I see something wonderful or intriguing, I want to shout “Look what I found”, I want to share what I see.

My curiosity has me photographing old doors, a discarded piece of machinery, a common view from a new angle, something different and new. My goal is to have people look at my photographs and not say “Oh he was there”, not to be just a record of where I have been or what I have done, but to feel what I did, whether in awe of beauty, excitement in or marveling at history. The best compliment I’ve had was a friend who said “… they (your photos) are no longer just snapshots, but you are now taking photographs.”

Procedure when arriving

Please find your name tag at the table when you walk in, then locate the attendance sheet on the table and check off your name. You can also see if you are up to date on your dues. If not, you can pay Winifred Simon at the meeting, or other options below.

Member Photo Share Theme:  Planes, Trains, and Automobiles or Eclipse Images

“Spring is here and, hopefully, summer will remain a few more weeks away. A good time to go somewhere. Unless you are a marathon walker, that means using wheels or wings. Those wheels and wings may provide the subject or accent element for great pictures. Antique cars, planes, wagons, cabooses, etc may be the whole focus of the trip. (I love steam trains.) For more flash and brawn there’s race cars, fire trucks, tractors, and big rigs. So get rollin”. – Bill Galloway

Please name your 2  images as follows:  1FirstName_LastName.jpg, 2FirstName_Last Name.jpg. No need to resize – just make sure it is a jpeg file. Send them by email to photos@jerrysargent.com by Tuesday, April 16th to insure they will be shown at the meeting (Note: As always, if you prefer to submit something other than the theme topic, you may do so.)
