From Bill Galloway,  “Of course, most of our hometowns – San Marcos, Austin, Georgetown, Wimberley—qualify.  But rivers run through a lot of things and places. March 2023

Hill Country Photography Club Posted on March 7, 2023 by Art ArizpeMarch 7, 2023

Please join us Thursday, March 16, 7:00 pm, at First Lutheran Church  for our next meeting. It comes very early this month – don’t miss it!

Agenda

6:30 – Set up and visit with early arrivals

7:00 – Welcome and Member News

7:20 – Announcements

7:30 – Program: Macro Photography with Jim Philpott

8:15 – Show and Tell – Theme: Shadows

Program:  Macro Photograpy with Jim Philpott. Jim is one of our newer members. If you’ve never done much macro photography, he will show you tips for getting good results. I asked Jim for some information about himself – it’s amazing what you find out about your photo friends!

Jim moved to Texas in 2013 after 45 years in Chattanooga, Tennessee where he conducted a counseling practice on behalf of the United Methodist Church. He, his late wife, Jeane, and daughter, Sarah, settled in Kyle to be near their oldest child, Ben, who lives in Austin and is the senior news editor for KUT Public Radio. Jim, along with Roger Allen and Wayne Bauknight, participate in a weekly Zoom meeting to explore photography and Lightroom Classic. They all joined HCPC last year.

He was licensed by the State of Tennessee as a Marital and Family Therapist and Clinical Pastoral Therapist. He received degrees at Union Theological Seminary in New York City, Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia, and Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. While in New York, he took a photography course and became a member of the community darkroom at Riverside Church. While in Richmond, he joined a community darkroom near the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
And, in his first appointment as an associate pastor in a church in Bristol, Virginia he studied photography and used the darkroom at the local college. His first serious camera was a Russian Zenit E SLR, a Pentax K 1000 was next, and he currently is photographing with a Nikon d850 and a Mamiya c220 Twin Lens Reflex 120 film camera. Macro Photography, he says, is an interest, not an obsession. “It was the perfect pursuit during the pandemic, allowing me stay home and photograph without coming into contact with anyone.”

Monthly Show & Tell:  Theme this month is “Shadows”.

From Bill Galloway:  Shadows can be the dominant subject of an image or may provide the background that enhances the subject.  They may be created by substantial objects such as tall buildings or by ephemeral phenomena such as wispy clouds.  They may be a product of natural or artificial light sources.  They may add mystery or clarity to a photograph.  Start looking for the shadows lurking in your photo files and be ready to share them at our March meeting.”

November 2022

Hill Country Photography Club Posted on November 8, 2022 by Art ArizpeNovember 8, 2022

Can you believe it’s already November?

For this month’s program Warren Capps and Tom Hausler will team up to tell us about their trip to Newfoundland.  Get ready for some great photography!

Then next January Mike Davis, an excellent bird photographer, will present a program on hummingbirds.  That will be something to look forward to.

Just a reminder that Naturescapes and Bridges photo pickup is this coming Saturday, November 5th, between noon and 4:30.

Our next meeting will be Thursday, November 17th, 7 pm, at First Lutheran Church of San Marcos, 130 West Holland Street in San Marcos.

On the agenda

  • Welcome
  • Member News Share and Discussion
  • 2023 Club Officers – please think about becoming involved as an officer!
  • Program
  • Photo Share

Program

Newfoundland — Seabird Capital of North America, presented by Warren Capps and Tom Hausler.  They discovered that Newfoundland offers a wide variety of photo opportunities, enough to satisfy any specialist.  It’s home to 35 million seabirds, including 25,000 gannets, 500,000 puffins, and many others — too many to list.

Photo Share

You may send up to two images to share with the group.  (You can send in any photos taken with any camera.  It doesn’t have to be the monthly theme.)  Tom Delaney has given us the following photo theme.

The topic this month is Aged to Perfection. What I mean by this is not just old, decaying, fallen-down subjects, but aged to perfection means it’s old but just as beautiful or even more so than when new.  Think aged wine, aged cheese.  You know, regal and has stood the test of time.  Portraits of people, as well as objects are fine.

For the Photo Share, send one or two images to photos@jerrysargent.com by the end of Monday, November 14th, and put November Photo Share – Aged to Perfection in the Subject line.

To prepare your images, we no longer have to resize our photos! Save them with the color space sRGB, and name them 1FirstName_LastName and 2FirstName_LastName.  For example, 1Linda_Avitt.

October 2022

Hill Country Photography Club Posted on October 4, 2022 by Art ArizpeOctober 4, 2022

There are so many interesting and accomplished photographers in our group, and this past year we’ve enjoyed a variety of wonderful programs every month.  We have a great line-up through next January, and this is what we have to look forward to:

In October Patty Robertson will be presenting Wildlife Photography in Alaska, June 2023.
Tom Hausler and Warren Capps will team up in November to tell us about their trip to Newfoundland.  Puffins!
Mike Davis, an excellent bird photographer, will present a program on hummingbirds next January.

Our next meeting will be Thursday, October 20th, 7 pm, at First Lutheran Church of San Marcos, 130 West Holland Street in San Marcos.

Program

“Wildlife Photography in Alaska, June 2023” – presented by Patty Robertson. If you’ve seen any of Patty’s work online or at an exhibit, you know we’re in for some spectacular photography and story.  You definitely won’t want to miss this!

Photo Share

You may send up to two images to share with the group.  (You can send in any photos taken with any camera.  It doesn’t have to be the monthly theme.)  Tom Delaney has given us the following photo theme.

October Theme – The topic this month is piebald.  Merriam-Webster defines this as 1) composed of incongruous parts or 2) of different colors, especially spotted or blotched with black and white.  I don’t want to restrict this to black and white, so think spotty or dappled.

For the Photo Share, send one or two images to photos@jerrysargent.com by the end of Monday, October 17th, and put October Photo Share – piebald in the Subject line.

To prepare your images, we no longer have to resize our photos! Save them with the color space sRGB, and name them 1FirstName_LastName and 2FirstName_LastName.  For example, 1Linda_Avitt.

Club Companion Exhibit to Naturescapes – Bridges
Entry Deadline: July 10th
Our club always puts on a members-only companion exhibit to Naturescapes. If you’ve never entered a photo exhibit, this is a great opportunity to participate and learn what all is involved. At the April meeting we decided to have the theme be “Bridges”. You can interpret “Bridges” any way you want, but it cannot be a nature photo (so it can’t be mixed up with Naturescapes). Submit up to three images, and you’re guaranteed to have at least one accepted.
