March 2017 Program

Hill Country Photography Club Posted on March 2, 2017 by Art ArizpeMarch 2, 2017

Converting Old Photos/Slides to Digital Format

Please join us for our next meeting Thursday, March 16th, at 7:00pm.

After a short business meeting and announcements, our guest presenter Suzanne Graham will show us how to convert old photos and slides into digital files. We all have boxes and/or albums full of aging photos or slides which are begging to be converted to digital for safekeeping, and restoring their original color.

We hope to see you at the meeting!  Bring your name tag if you have one!

Agenda:

7:00 – 7:20  Welcome, Introductions, and Member News

7:25 – 8:15  Program: Converting Old Photos/Slides to Digital Format

8:20 – 9:00  Critiques: Leading Lines – definition: Leading lines are lines within an image that lead the eye to another point in the image, or occasionally, out of the image. Anything with a definite line can be a leading line. Fences, bridges, even a shoreline can lead the eye. (see below for details on submitting)

About Suzanne: “After earning a degree in Journalism from Baylor University, I went to work for the company that eventually became Valero. I was their publications editor, doing the writing, photography, and graphic design for three publications. I had originally been drawn into Journalism because of writing, but as I worked I discovered that my interests and talents were more in photography and graphic design. My Journalism training still influences me today. I am less of an “artistic” photographer, and more of an “event” photographer.

I taught Journalism at my son’s private middle/high school for 7 years. We did the school’s newspaper and yearbook. During those years everything went digital. Layouts began to be done on computers instead of boards. Cameras went digital, and I bought my first. And photo editing became possible.

When my youngest child graduated, I resigned from teaching and started my own business. I have been in the photography business for 30+ years. I love that my job lets me work in every facet of media. But if I had to pick one area that excites me the most, it would be preserving my clients’ memories. Sometimes that means scanning old documents and photos. Sometimes it is restoring priceless family pictures. Sometimes it means converting slides to digital so they can be enjoyed in modern formats. They aren’t just pictures, they are memories of people and places from the past that are worth reliving and passing on to future generations.”

Dues for 2017 are $12.

New members joining after the first of the year will pay a prorated amount. You may pay by check at the next meeting or mail to our treasurer, Winifred Simon, at 600 Red Hawk Road, Wimberley, TX 78676, or pay using PayPal.

Critiques: Leading Lines

You may submit up to 2 images. Please resize them to 2,000 pixels on the long side, with a resolution of 72, and name them 1FirstName_LastName.jpg, 2FirstName_LastName.jpg.

Please email them to hcphotoclub@gmail.com by Tuesday, March 14th, so Jørgen will have time to prepare them for the meeting.

Name Tags!

Paid members will receive a permanent name tag to wear at each meeting. This will include your 2.5 inch x 3.5 inch image, with your name on it. Come to the next meeting to learn more about it! If you were at the January meeting, you can bring your own custom name tag to the February meeting, or send me your file, and I will print it for you, if you don’t have a printer.

Critiques: Before and After

You may submit 2 sets of images, with a “before” and “edited” for each set.

To prepare your images, please resize them to 2,000 pixels on the long side, and a resolution of 72, and label them 1FirstName_LastName_BF, and 1FirstName_LastName_Edit, and 2FirstName_Last Name_BF, etc.

Please submit to hcphotoclub@gmail.com by Tuesday, February 14th, so Jørgen will have time to prepare them for the meeting.

Also, please be prepared to briefly explain to the group what you did in your editing – what editing software you might have used for your images. This is a great way to show others how a “not so great” out of camera image can be “saved,” and turned into something special.

October 2016 Program

Hill Country Photography Club Posted on October 6, 2016 by Art ArizpeOctober 6, 2016

How Did You Do That?

We have a special meeting planned for Thursday, October 20th at 7:00 pm. Club members will share their vision, techniques, and tools as we review their images. You don’t want to miss it!

Agenda:

7:00 – 7:25   Welcome, Member Share, and Announcements

7:30 – 9:00   How did you do that? – Club particpants

About Our Program: How did you do that?

oct-16-beforeoct-16-after

When I first started coming to the photo club meetings, one of the most helpful activities for me, was seeing other club members’ “before and after” images. It was then that I realized I was taking pretty good pictures, but didn’t have a clue how to edit them in a way that brought out the best in my image. Hearing other members share the various ways they chose to improve their images was a game changer for me. I think it will be a fun exercise whether you are a seasoned photographer, or a beginner.

For this month’s meeting, we are going to ask you to submit one (or two) “Before and After” sets of images. We want to know HOW you arrived at your final image, by sharing some of the following information:

  1. Was the image taken with a digital camera, or a phone camera?
  2. How did you make your edits – with Photoshop, Lightroom, Picasa, phone apps (which ones) or other programs?
  3. If you used some Plug-in filters, please (try to) tell us what you used…. the name of the plug-ins (On1, Topaz, Nik, etc.), plus any specifics you want to share beyond that.

Please come prepared to share more specific details of your editing workflow. It does not need to be a drastic edit, but something that shows where you started, and how you chose to make your final image. This will NOT be a critique session, unless you specifically request suggestions for your particular image.

To prepare your images, please resize them to 2,000 pixels on the long side, and label them 1FirstName_LastName_BF, and 1FirstName_LastName_Edit, and 2FirstName_Last Name, etc. Please try to get these submitted to hcphotoclub@gmail.com by October 18.

Please Note:

Since we will be talking about our images in more detail than our normal “Critiques”, we will show at least one set of images from each person who chooses to send one, and then look at additional sets as time and interest allow.

Reminders

  • If you have a Facebook account, you may join our club’s Closed Group page and keep up with current member news as well as postings of Calls for Entry that you may wish to enter, or share other important or interesting information with our group. Go to HCPC Members. You must be a paid member to post and use this account. It is the easiest and best way to keep current on photo opps and member news. Closeup/Macro Photography

We hope you join us at our photo club meeting on Thursday, August 18th, 7:00 pm at Brookdale San Marcos North (formerly Horizon Bay). Come a little early if you want to visit with your friends, and find your name tag.

Club member Linda Avitt will share her knowledge for making beautiful macro images. You don’t want to miss hearing how she captures such amazing images … indoors!

“One of my greatest joys is linda_avitt_programspending time in our pollinator garden. I love the vibrant colors, earthy smells, and how it feels in my hands. Looking beyond the obvious, many tiny treasures patiently wait to be discovered, and over the years I’ve come to know each little garden visitor and plant as an individual. Capturing those individuals in macro images presents unique challenges and rewards.

In this presentation I’ll share some of the tips and techniques I’ve learned (mostly the hard way!) for making interesting, beautiful macro images.” – Linda Avitt

July 2016 Program

Walk in My Shoes

We hope you join us at our next photo club meeting on Thursday, July 21st, 7:00 pm at Brookdale San Marcos North (formerly Horizon Bay). Come a little early if you want to visit with your friends, and find your name tag.

Tom Bender will present “Walk in My Shoes”.

Tom is a Native Texan who transitioned to Maine, and back to Texas. He also transitioned from film to digital during that time. He returns many times to the places and objects he has photographed; to observe the time lapse – a couple of minutes or several days – and reflect changes in light and the mood as he captures the images. When he moved to Wimberley, he also moved more into digital photo art, some of it is surreal.

This move is evident in his phone booth series, the violin series, and many more of his recent works. While some of his surreal Bender_1images invoke questions, they are never dark. Tongue in cheek would be the better description.

Tom is a “self taught photographer” whose training was due to a fortuitous collection of mentors. His first mentor, the most influential, taught him to see the details in reflections and in the shadows. Perhaps more importantly, he taught Tom how to capture those details on film. That profound experience shaped the next 45 years of Tom’s artistic journey and resulted in a true love of art. He is active in the Art Guild of the Kennebunks, the Wimberley Valley Art League, and the New Braunfels Art League.

Critiques: Your Natural World

You may send 2 images to share in the Critique portion of the meeting. Please re-size your files to 1000 pixels on the long side, and name them FirstName_LastName_1.jpg, etc. Email them to hcphotoclub@gmail.com by Tuesday, July 19th.

You may ask for a critique, or simply “show and tell.”
