Member Share

Please join us for our August meeting on Thursday, August 17th, at 7pm. It is all about YOU! In lieu of a guest speaker, this month we will share, share, share. Please come with great questions, or useful information to share with your fellow club members.

Things you may want to share:

  1. Your favorite book publishing company – since My Publisher has closed its operations, I am looking for a quality substitute for travel books. You may even want to bring a sample and tell us why you like it.
  2. What is your “go-to” photo editing software for laptops and desktops. Photoshop or Lightroom, On1, On1Raw, Topaz, MacPhun, etc.
  3. What is your favorite cell phone app or apps – what do you know that we don’t??
  4. Can you print your cell phone images? What about quality?
  5. If you have your work printed, who do you use?
  6. If you do your own printing, where do you get your paper, and why?
  7. Do you have a website that offers good tutorials on editing?
  8. How do you share your images? Do you have a website? Do you need a website?
  9. Do you have a project your are working on, and need backers to help fund your cause? Come and share your project with us!

Please come ready to share and ask questions. We have a wealth of informed photographers who are happy to share what they know, and eager to learn more from you!

Introduction to Astrophotography

I hope you are finding ways to make the most of these hot summer days. If it’s too hot during the day to get out with your camera, why not try some Night Photography? Please join us on Thursday, July 20th, at 7:00 pm, for our next meeting which will feature Astrophographer Jerry Moreno who will share and inspire you with his beautiful night sky images, and let you in on how he captures them.

7:25 – 8:15  Program: Introduction to Astrophotography with Jerry Moreno

Introduction to Astrophotography with Jerry Moreno

Jerry Moreno was born in Mexico, and immigrated to the US in 1999. He has been living in Dripping Springs since moving to the USA. His passion for photography began in 2012 when he was at a cousin’s wedding, which was in the middle of nowhere. He tried to capture pictures of stars using nothing but his hands as a tripod but the results were disappointing. That night Jerry went online and bought a tripod and shutter remote. He became greatly interested in Astrophotography in the summer of 2015 and it is all he has done for the past 2 years. Jerry received First place in the Texas Night Sky Festival in 2016, and was a runner-up in 2017. Jerry is also a member of Photographers of Dripping Springs (PODS), our sister photography club.

Dues for 2017 are $12.

New members joining after the first of the year will pay a prorated amount. You may pay by check at the next meeting or mail to our treasurer, Winifred Simon, at 600 Red Hawk Road, Wimberley, TX 78676, or pay using PayPal.

Critiques: Duplicate/Pairs

For this month’s critiques, please send 2 images that convey pairs, or two of something – and you may be creative with this topic.

You may submit up to 2 images. Please resize them to 2,000 pixels on the long side, with a resolution of 72, and name them 1FirstName_LastName.jpg, 2FirstName_LastName.jpg. Remember, when showing your images, you may ask for a critique or suggestions for improvement from members, or simply “show and tell” your image.

About Our Program: Wildflower Macro/Close-ups and Focus Stacking with Bruce Leander

Bruce Leander earned a B.S. in Biology from Springfield College an M.S. degree in Zoology from Texas Tech University and an MBA from the University of Wisconsin. After one semester as an undergraduate art major his Dad said he wouldn’t pay for his education unless he changed his major to something more business-like. His previous work experience includes positions in a number of companies in the biotechnology industry and he retired in 2007.

Mr. Leander is the “unofficial” Photographer in Residence at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center and has 24/7 access to photograph nature. The Center uses his images for marketing and promotional materials, and for exhibited prints around the facility. Much of the work is close-up or macro and he has extensive experience with focus stacking techniques.

While he candidly admits he may or may not be qualified to speak at a photography club meeting, he does something with nature photography every day, where he believes the more you practice, the better you get.

His business card reads: Biotechnology, Art, Photography, Golf

April 2017 Program

Hill Country Photography Club Posted on April 2, 2017 by Art ArizpeApril 17, 2017

Native Americans of the Adirondacks

Please join us for our next meeting Thursday, April 20th, at 7:00pm.

Club member Charlie Kreitler will be our “guest” speaker, and will talk about creating 3 photographic panels of Native Americans of the Adirondack region (upstate New York). Charlie will briefly cover his use of Photoshop to put the panels together and then a discussion of the story behind each panel. Digital versions of each panel as well as full-scale paper draft versions of each panel will be shown at the meeting.

Agenda:

7:00 – 7:20  Welcome, Introductions, and Member News

7:25 – 8:15  Program: Native Americans of the Adirondacks with Charlie Kreitler

8:20 – 9:00  Critiques: Forms in Nature

About Our Program: Native Americans of the Adirondacks with Charlie Kreitler

In Fall 2015, Charlie was approached by the curator of the Lake George Historical Association’s museum to create a set of panels to depict the life and times of the Native Americans in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York.

In Charlie’s words: “It was an assignment quite different from the norm. I was asked to build with Photoshop three large (3 ft x 3 ft) panels depicting different aspects of Native Americans from the Iroquois Nation. The panels focused on: 1) the paintings, sketches, photographs of the people from the 1600’s to the present, 2) treaties and documents of the tribes and 3) the totems of their ancestors. Within each panel, individual images were cut and pasted and blended with different degrees of transparency so that images grow out of one another and give an integrated look to each panel. The tenor of the panels was to be ‘artistic’ and not historical or literal in interpretation. I worked with several museums that provided digital access to historic paintings and historic photographs, living artists, and Native Americans. The panels were reviewed by a representative of the Mohawk tribe to make sure they were accurate.”

Dues for 2017 are $12.

New members joining after the first of the year will pay a prorated amount. You may pay by check at the next meeting or mail to our treasurer, Winifred Simon, at 600 Red Hawk Road, Wimberley, TX 78676, or pay using PayPal.
