Hill Country Photography Club Posted on January 10, 2024 by Art ArizpeJanuary 11, 2024

Please join us Thursday, January 18th, 7:00 pm, at First Lutheran Church  for our first meeting of the year!

Agenda

6:30 – 7:00 Set up for the meeting. Visitation time for early arrivals

7:00 – Welcome and Member News

7:15 – Club Business

1. Election of officers – still time to throw your hat into the ring for  vice-president!!. Janet Wallace has agreed to take over the secretary job from Rose Epps. Thank you Janet! Please let me know ASAP if you are interested and willing to help your club as VP. It is not a requirement that you move into the role of president if you do.

2. Dues for 2024 are now payable, ($12) either in person with check or cash (correct change appreciated) at the meeting, or by going to paypal in this link:  https://hcphotoclub.org/membership/   You may also pay by check to HCPC and mail to our treasurer, Winifred Simon, 600 Red Hawk Road, Wimberley, TX 78676.

3. Sign up to help on Committees:  Field trips – research and organize field trips. David Olson can use your help!  I would like to add one or two more people to this committee.  You don’t have to have a big group to have a successful field trip – as they say sometimes, Less is More.

7:30 – Program: A New Year Invites Us to Reflect presented by members of the Lightroom Classic Collaboration

8:15 – Member Photo Share, Theme – Theme: Sun Shots

Program:  A New Year Invites Us to Reflect

This month’s program is all about “reflection photography.”

It is a safe bet to say you have taken photos using water, a mirror, or some shiny surface to capture the reflection of yourself or some other subject. The January presentation will introduce you to the many ways we find reflections all around us and give you ideas for future photo projects.  Several of our club members are participants in a Tuesday morning Zoom meeting dedicated to learning about the Lightroom Classic editing program. These members of the Lightroom Classic Collaboration will lead the program.

Member Photo Share:  Theme this month is Holidays

“The holidays are upon us: Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, Boxing Day, New Year. So take the camera along and capture some of the visual sights of the season. The possibilities range from holiday lights, decorations, festivals, people, parties, to parades and performances. Or be creative in your interpretations.” – Bill Galloway

Please name your 2  images as follows:  1FirstName_LastName.jpg, 2FirstName_Last Name.jpg. No need to resize – just make sure it is a jpeg file. Send them by email to photos@jerrysargent.com by Tuesday, January 16th to insure they will be shown at the meeting.(Note: As always, if you prefer to submit something other than the theme topic, you may do so.)

Dues

Annual dues are a bargain at $12 per year. If you haven’t renewed, you may pay at the meeting, or use our PayPal by using this link, or you can mail your check to Winifred Simon at 600 Red Hawk Road, Wimberley, TX  78676. November 2023

Hill Country Photography Club Posted on November 5, 2023 by Art ArizpeNovember 5, 2023

Please join us Thursday, November 16th, 7:00 pm, at First Lutheran Church  for our next meeting.

Our program will be of interest to many of you who want to learn more about Astrophotography, and those like me who like to see what people do with the cameras after I go to bed! Darrell Carder will give you tips for making some special images so you can “wow” your friends.

Agenda

6:30 – 7:00 Set up for the meeting. Visitation time for early arrivals

7:00 – Welcome and Member News

7:25 – Program: Ins and Outs of Astrophotography: A Short Introduction with Darrell Carder

8:15 – Member Photo Share, Theme – Theme: Sun Shots

Program:  Ins and Outs of Astrophotography: A Short Introduction

About Darrell:

“My photography journey started when watching my Dad taking pictures. The process of measuring the light with a light meter and determining the correct settings amazed me. As I grew older, I was allowed to use the light meter and his Canon camera to take my own pictures. After graduating from college and starting work I bought my first camera, a Pentax K1000. For many years I would describe my photography as ‘drive by shooting’. It seemed that I was always holding up the rest of the group trying to get a good composition and having to hurry through it.

Working for Motorola Semiconductors as an electrical engineer gave me an opportunity to take the family to Israel for 4 months for work.  I then bought a Nikon FE2 SLR and I’ve stayed with Nikon since then with my latest being the D850.

Over the last 5 or so years I’ve been able to focus and learn more on composition and my family has learned to accept my photo op adventures.

I’ve always been intrigued looking at the night sky. A discussion with a co-worker on photography, and seeing some star trail pictures he took, got me started on astrophotography. While doing some searching on the web, I came across Richard Tatti’s Nightscape Images on YouTube and started following some of his tutorials. Between different YouTube tutorials and lots of Trial and error I’ve developed my own form of nightscape photography.“

Member Photo Share:  Theme this month is Sun Shots

“If you pointed a camera at the sun on October 14th, this topic is for you. If you didn’t, there are a lot of photographic moments when the sun plays a critical role: rainbows, shadows, moonlight, sunsets and sunrises. So work up those eclipse shots or scour your files for images that really “shine”. – Bill Galloway

Please name your 2  images as follows:  1FirstName_LastName.jpg, 2FirstName_Last Name.jpg. No need to resize – just make sure it is a jpeg file. Send them by email to photos@jerrysargent.com by November 14th to insure they will be shown at the meeting.(Note: As always, if you prefer to submit something other than the theme topic, you may do so.)

Please join us Thursday, September 21st, 7:00 pm, at First Lutheran Church  for our next meeting.

Program:  No Walking, let the birds come to you

Longtime club member Dr. Alice Le Duc came to our club knowing more than any of us about plants and horticulture. She has shared that knowledge with us in meetings over the years, as well as hosting field trips to the Texas State Greenhouse. Since coming to San Marcos, Alice developed a passion for birding and bird photography. She has visited many Texas bird hotspots on numerous occasions, and has some great tips to share with you at our next meeting.

Program:  A Camera with a Story

Do you have an old camera? Can you show it and share a memory from it or tell a story about it? Did you use it or was it used by someone else? The goal of the program is to provide a short history of the camera and talk about why the old equipment deserves respect and appreciation.

We have several members who have agreed to bring a camera, old photographs, and participate, but we have room for more. Please email Jim at:  j.philpottwoodturner@gmail.com to let him know if you want to join in the presentation. He will try to include “your” camera in the PowerPoint slide show.

Member Photo Share:  Theme this month is Hot Stuff

“We know this topic is pretty self explanatory.  Just open your door, take a picture of your yard, and you have a suitable entry. However, if you are feeling more creative, the topic includes all sorts of possibilities: cooking food, a solar eclipse, desert landscapes, that cool outfit you were wearing back in the day, fast cars, etc. So go for the obvious or dig through your files for the perfect entries.”  Bill Galloway

Please resize and rename your 2  images as follows:  1FirstName_LastName.jpg, 2FirstName_Last Name.jpg, and resize to 2000 pixels on the long side.  NOTE: Send them by email to photos@jerrysargent.com by August 15th to insure they will be shown at the meeting.(Note: As always, if you prefer to submit something other than the theme topic, you may do so.)

May 2023

Hill Country Photography Club Posted on May 5, 2023 by Art ArizpeMay 5, 2023

I hope you are enjoying the spring weather and are making lots of beautiful pictures. I am sorry we had to cancel last month’s meeting, but the safety of our members is most important to us. I’m happy to announce that Art Arizpe’s program about the Monarch butterflies migration to Mexico has been rescheduled for the July 20 meeting.

I’m excited about this month’s program with photographer and filmmaker John Langmore. We had scheduled John to come during 2020, but that had to be put on hold. In his “spare” time, he made a documentary film!  He will share his journey and images with you on May 18.

Please join us Thursday, May 18, 7:00 pm, at First Lutheran Church  for our next meeting.

8:15 – end Member Photo Share, Theme – Theme: My Favorite Things.

Program

After studying extensively under Mary Ellen Mark, John began pursuing his own documentary projects. His first project, Fault Lines, documenting a rapidly gentrifying community in his hometown of Austin was published by Trinity University Press (2019). His second long-term project, Open Range: America’s Big-Outfit Cowboy, was published by Twin Palms Publishers (2018).

Over the course of six years, John photographed fourteen of the country’s largest ranches, including several where he previously worked. John photographed the entire project on film and displays only gelatin silver prints. John’s work on the cowboy has been extensively published and exhibited in galleries and museums. John also co-directed/produced, Cowboys, a feature-length documentary film on contemporary working cowboys which premiered at the Austin Film Festival where it won the Documentary Feature Audience Award (2019). It also won Cowboys & Indians Magazine’s inaugural Best Feature Documentary. The film was broadcast internationally by ArteFrance.

Member Photo Share:  Theme this month is “A River Runs Through it.

From Bill Galloway,  “Of course, most of our hometowns – San Marcos, Austin, Georgetown, Wimberley—qualify.  But rivers run through a lot of things and places. Dams, bridges, canyons, valleys come to mind. These offer chances to get creative in your search for rivers lurking in your photo collection.” (As always, if you prefer to share something other than the theme for the month, you may do so.)

March 2023

Hill Country Photography Club Posted on March 7, 2023 by Art ArizpeMarch 7, 2023

Please join us Thursday, March 16, 7:00 pm, at First Lutheran Church  for our next meeting. It comes very early this month – don’t miss it!

Agenda

6:30 – Set up and visit with early arrivals

7:00 – Welcome and Member News

7:20 – Announcements

7:30 – Program: Macro Photography with Jim Philpott

8:15 – Show and Tell – Theme: Shadows

Program:  Macro Photograpy with Jim Philpott. Jim is one of our newer members. If you’ve never done much macro photography, he will show you tips for getting good results. I asked Jim for some information about himself – it’s amazing what you find out about your photo friends!

Jim moved to Texas in 2013 after 45 years in Chattanooga, Tennessee where he conducted a counseling practice on behalf of the United Methodist Church. He, his late wife, Jeane, and daughter, Sarah, settled in Kyle to be near their oldest child, Ben, who lives in Austin and is the senior news editor for KUT Public Radio. Jim, along with Roger Allen and Wayne Bauknight, participate in a weekly Zoom meeting to explore photography and Lightroom Classic. They all joined HCPC last year.

He was licensed by the State of Tennessee as a Marital and Family Therapist and Clinical Pastoral Therapist. He received degrees at Union Theological Seminary in New York City, Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia, and Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. While in New York, he took a photography course and became a member of the community darkroom at Riverside Church. While in Richmond, he joined a community darkroom near the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
And, in his first appointment as an associate pastor in a church in Bristol, Virginia he studied photography and used the darkroom at the local college. His first serious camera was a Russian Zenit E SLR, a Pentax K 1000 was next, and he currently is photographing with a Nikon d850 and a Mamiya c220 Twin Lens Reflex 120 film camera. Macro Photography, he says, is an interest, not an obsession. “It was the perfect pursuit during the pandemic, allowing me stay home and photograph without coming into contact with anyone.”

Monthly Show & Tell:  Theme this month is “Shadows”.

From Bill Galloway:  Shadows can be the dominant subject of an image or may provide the background that enhances the subject.  They may be created by substantial objects such as tall buildings or by ephemeral phenomena such as wispy clouds.  They may be a product of natural or artificial light sources.  They may add mystery or clarity to a photograph.  Start looking for the shadows lurking in your photo files and be ready to share them at our March meeting.”
